Free Film Screening and Premiere! The Pass System

The L.R. Wilson Institute for Canadian History and McMaster’s Indigenous Studies Program invite you to a free screening and the Hamilton premiere of the new documentary, The Pass System, at 2:30pm on March 4 at McMaster University in MDCL Room 1105.

This groundbreaking documentary explores Canada’s long and disturbing history of racial segregation via the pass system – a system that, for 60 years, denied Indigenous peoples the basic freedom to leave their reserves without a government issued pass. The film, narrated by actress Tantoo Cardinal, includes powerful interviews with Cree, Soto, Dene, Ojibwe and Blackfoot elders who had firsthand experience with this system of racial segregation.

The documentary has already received glowing press from the Toronto Star, CBC Radio 1 and the Regina Leader Post among others and the screening will include a Q&A session with Director Alex Williams.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Ian Mosby at mosbi@mcmaster.ca.
