The Department of Linguistics and Languages will host a talk by Dr. Jessica Coon on January 25th
The Department of Linguistics and Languages will host a talk by Dr. Jessica Coon on linguistic diversity and communicating with aliens. Dr. Coon attracted recently a significant media attention for her consultant work on a Hollywood blockbuster “The Arrival” (CBC Radio’s The Current, The Washington Post and Playboy to name just a few). Dr. Coon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at McGill University and Canada Research Chair in Syntax. She received her doctorate from MIT. Her research is focused on syntax and morphology, especially of understudied languages of the Americas. In her McMaster’s public talk she will address how human languages might differ from their hypothetical extraterrestrial counterparts, how human languages might be different from one another and whether these differences have bigger consequences for how we see the world.
