Term 1 Course Selection
- All M.A. students should select 2 seminars.
- All M.A. students must select History 741, Historiography.
- Historiography is mandatory for all M.A. students; Ph.D. candidates may take it as one of their minor fields.
- Ph.D. candidates select 2 seminars offered in the first term to meet the Minor Field requirements.
- Minor fields will be selected from the 700-level seminars offered in the fall term. Two will be selected. These may not overlap the major field, ecxept in Twentieth Century Europe where on seminar may be in modern Europe, Gender History, War and Society, and Health and Medicine where one minor field may be in an area related to the regional subject area of their thesis research. The grade for each minor field will be based on the seminar requirements, the examination and a historiographical paper, in combination as indicated by the minor field supervisor. Under exceptional circumstances in minor field may be taken in the second term. Candidates wishing to take one of their minor fields outside the Department must obtain permission of the History Department Graduate Committee.
Term 2 Course Selection - M.A. by course work students must select 3 seminars, one of which may be a research seminar.
- Graduate students may take one Independent Study course as part of their program. Consultation with the appropriate instructor and approval by the Graduate Studies Committee are required. Instructors may accept no more than three independent studies students.
- One seminar may be taken from outside the department, either in term 1 or term 2. Consultation with the appropriate instructor and approval by the Graduate Studies Committee are required.
M.A. by Course Work and Research Paper consists of 6 graduate seminars and the MA Research Paper (History 797).
In the fall term students will take the mandatory seminar in Historiography (History 741), and will choose two seminars.
Following completion of the above seminars, students will begin work on the MA Research Paper. Length of paper: about 30 pages of text (8,000-10,000 words), exclusive of footnotes and bibliography. The paper is due the first week of August.
M.A. by Course Work and Thesis consists of 5 graduate seminars and a thesis. Thesis proposals must be submitted to the Department in early October. In the fall term students will take the mandatory seminar in Historiography and will choose two seminars. In the winter term, students will take three seminars.
