Motive Development and the Musical Narrative

This pictoral chart of Rondo I, based on a detailed analysis of the rondo, reveals the relationship between the rondo theme and the episodes and coda. The textual descriptions are given in Expansion and Repetition in Rondo I and in Chart I - Rondos I, III and V, Opus 3 by Jane Savage: Similarities and Differences. You can compare this pictorial chart to a representation of a typical rondo as found in Chart II - Rondos and Their Conventional Form. The numbers indicate actual measures. Please note that I chose lighter and darker shades of yellow to indicate the repeated motives in the antecedent and consequent phrases as well as the cadential regions. One of the important repeating motives, centered on the pitch "e" is in m. 6: variations of this motive and variations of the rondo theme cadences reappear in the following episodes.

I also used different colours to show how the episodes and the coda are supposed to be different from the rondo theme. I did not need to use darker shades of bright blue, dark blue and pink in the episodes, since the rondo theme material is developed in the episodes and the coda. Some motives from the episodes do get repeated in the following episodes and in the coda.
