Listening With Empathy: How can I walk in your shoes when they feel so uncomfortable?
Thursday, March 3, 2016, MDCL 1016, 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm
How does one create a safe space for dialogue in a public or private conversation? How do we listen to people’s beliefs and positions so we can also hear the underlying interests, feelings, and values? How do we let people know that we are trying to understand them, even when we disagree with them? The hope, of course, is that when they feel truly heard, they will also listen to us. This workshop provides tools and practice for listening with empathy.
At the workshop, participants will:
- Identify and analyze accepting and rejecting responses;
- Practice paraphrasing and empathic listening;
- Develop skills in value clarification;
- Discover how to communicate helpfully with everyone.
This workshop is intended for students. To register, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
